Of all the tails and myths of werewolves, there are no known persons to have experience with any of them. Our knowledge only goes as far as the ‘brief sightings’ during a full moon or what we see on television. Those who do believe, claim that the creatures fear exposure and that they have every right to; with the prospect of becoming lab animals or being killed off, what would they have to look forward to? Few take into consideration the idea that they are all around us and that we see them every day, but they can no longer speak our language or take on the human form.
All of our stories started out the same with only our lives being different. If you’re here now then our stories ended the same as well, though only to start another life in another world. Being bitten by a wolf has been documented as nothing more than a rogue attack or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Other bites have unknown circumstances with the conclusion being the disappearance of another person and the birth of another wolf.
For the past decade, Darling has been the refuge for an undocumented species of wolf at an unknown location of the world. How they all knew to come here - that they would be welcome or even how to get here - remains as much a mystery as how it happened. Every wolf here can recall their previous life of being a living and breathing person, leading up to the unlucky attack of a random wolf; none of which had anything more in common than being apart of the family Canis lupis. Lastly, all would fall unconscious as a human being and wake up as a wolf, containing all the knowledge, memories, characteristics and vices they had as a human but now forced to walk on all fours and endure the rest of their lives as the last thing they encountered; the wolf.
Of the ten years that Darling has existed, seven have been harmonious for these wolves for they know not what else to refer to themselves as. They lived in one community in a few separate ‘packs’ holding a mixture of human and wolf behaviors, though harshly favoring the human side. Darling has provided everything for these wolves to satisfy both their animalistic desires and permit them to keep their humanity, and by grouping together the wolves discovered how they were ‘morphed’ and that the typical age they are born into as a wolf is no more than a year old; offering plenty of time to mature and be supported by other, more experienced wolves. Naturally born wolves – those who were never human – are not permitted here for fear of their aggression as they seem capable of sensing the difference in the wolves of Darling.
Darling was as perfect for these wolves as they could ever imagine, and for seven years they benefited from it and internal cooperation. Yet while every wolf here may have a common history and every reason to unite to survive, their human characteristics created greater problems than the average wolf would have to endure with differences of opinion and leadership. Then, starting towards the end of the seventh year, a naturally born wolf integrated itself into the Darling wolf community and began a separation. By the end of year ten, the wolves have a discriminate separation – those who believe remaining as human as possible is the best way, and those who believe in completely converting to their animal side is the best way. Thus the creation of The Loyalists who survive on knowledge and The Pack who survive on instinct. Those who remained indecisive were either killed or taken captive and forced to convert. Many went into hiding while the main separation was going on, fearing abandonment by family and friends for their decisions and waiting for the worst to blow over. Now they return – along side those just entering Darling, most unaware of the divide – all of them either choosing a side or killed.
